.106 Ben Lang

A true linguist, Ben was the first to teach me the language of New York City when I first moved here nearly 5 years ago. Less than a year earlier I had spent a week with him in Paris, staying on his couch in Le Marais, but now it was March 2016 and there I was again at his new doorstep, only this time with a job to start two days later. Ben welcomed me and my two suitcases inside his quaint apartment and made me feel instantly at home. This sense of graciousness and unconscious compassion that he showed me is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Ben. He gave me a home during my first two weeks in the city, but more than that, he gave me the encouragement and confidence to start my life here.

By his very nature, Ben is an expert at listening. He picks up on your emotions and meaning with his staggering intelligence and big heart, and he’s instantly ready to keep the conversation going through his innate curiosity. Ben lives his life through a constant practice of learning, always soaking up the world around him and appreciating the tiniest details in the largest of places. In Paris, he gave me a daily recommendation list of things to do that puts Trip Advisor to shame. In New York, he showed me around the important spots and let me wander to find others on my own. He’s uniquely diligent and driven, never letting ego get in the way and never letting an obstacle get the better of him. As a human being, Ben is truly good. He looks out for those in his life and he’s unassumingly supportive of all that you are. A cherry on top of this sundae is Ben’s patience. He’s watched as I have gone through mental loops in my life and has never left my side if I need a little help or guidance.

Ben, thank you very much for being such a crucial part of my life and for always bringing me such joy (and so much laughter). Thank you for your calming presence, your wildly talented brain, and for being such a sponge when it comes to learning in this life. Thank you for being patient with me and for always knowing what to say or do. Thank you for showing me around Paris; it’s one of the best experiences of my life. Thank you for being so kind and considerate and for your unconditional love that you show your friends and family. I’m so grateful we met at Grady’s party almost a decade ago and even more grateful for the adventures we have shared since. Thank you, Ben, for being all that you are.
