.003 Michael Ryan
I first met Michael during my first day working at TED here in NYC. Immediately I was struck by his sweet southern compassion and reassuring smile. Meeting Michael is like releasing air after holding your breath - he allows you to relax, to be heard, to be seen, and he makes you feel loved right off the bat.
Michael is one of those great connectors of people and communities. He’s always looking to bring people together over pride, music, YouTube playlists, walking tours through Manhattan, the list goes on. He surrounds himself with so many lovely people, which is really a testament to his energy and kindness. Michael is super smart and combining that with his empathy and openness makes him a wonderful friend and (former) colleague. I’m constantly in awe of his calm attitude and level-headed mindset through all that life has to offer.
Michael, I am so grateful for you and our friendship. You’re one of the first people I met in NYC that made me feel taken care of and looked after. I’m grateful for our 3pm coffee walks, all the times we’ve met up for something gay, a protest, a party, or a drink. You are such a beautiful example of what humans can be - open-minded, kind-hearted, adventurous and ambitious, gentle and inquisitive. Thank you for always checking in, for being someone I can talk to and bounce ideas off of with the expectation that you will be supportive and honest. Thank you for being such a rock for me as a friend during my first year here in NYC especially, and beyond. Thank you for making all of our (your friends) lives better by just existing! Thank you for being you.
