.245 John Unwin
John, or as I know him, Mr. Unwin, was one of my favorite teachers in high school. He was a teacher, a mentor, an extremely hard worker, a raven, and someone who could (and would) always make me laugh. Mr. Unwin was, and still is, all of those things, but most of all he was a role model for what it meant to be a true gentleman filled with empathy, intelligence and unconditional kindness.
His presence was always known on campus due to his unique energy, powerful voice and welcoming approach. I always loved seeing him around the hallways, and in class he was just as fun to be around as he was to learn from. He inspires students to take control of their education and to get invested in the content and the work. As a teacher, and especially at CCA, he knows that each student comes with a specific set of passions, quirks, and struggles. When I came out during my junior year, I remember Mr. Unwin being completely unfazed and simultaneously immensely supportive of me. It changed nothing and he treated me as he always had; with kindness and respect. In doing so, he indirectly was helping me build my confidence and character.
Mr. Unwin, thank you for being such a stellar educator and role model for so many. Thank you for always making me laugh and for your sincerity and deep compassion in all of your words and actions. Thank you for being such a consistent supporter of the soccer team and for your raven call that always motivated us to keep going. Thank you for being so dedicated to educating and connecting with students. Thank you for the important work that you do. As an aside, if you’re as amazing as I know you to be as a teacher, I’m sure as a father that you are even more remarkable. Thank you, Mr. Unwin, for being you!
