.087 Erika Reilly
During my last two years of high school, I went to my local Starbucks a LOT, mostly to write college essays and applications, and sometimes just to chat with friends. One of the reasons I went so much and why that physical space and time meant so much to me was Erika. She was one of the astoundingly kind and openhearted staff members who treated me as an adult and with such respect, something I appreciated then and even more so now. Day after day, she was compassionate, honest, and gave space to my thoughts and ideas that I often rattled off to her while she was doing her actual job. I am forever grateful to her for that patience and the time she gave me.
Over those years, we talked so much about things big and small. One time quite literally, as we discussed possible names for her baby on the way (who’s 9 YEARS OLD now…). I just felt so comfortable talking with Erika, and she always greeted me with a huge smile and, when she had a minute spare, one of her signature Erika hugs. She genuinely was (still is) a breath of fresh air, someone who could pick my day up in an instant just by me seeing that she was working when I walked in the door. I’m fairly certain there were moments where I turned around and went home if I saw that she wasn’t working that day. Perhaps what I’m most grateful for is the simple connection we had as human beings, even though our lives were and are so different. Erika didn’t let any of that get in the way of just being sweet, a good listener, and a helpful and thoughtful friend and mentor. She is one of the most resilient and strong people that I know. She continues to keep moving forward (with her 4 kids, mind you) and leads a life based on dignity, doing your best, and treating others with kindness.
Erika, thank you so very much for playing such a crucial role in my life at such a crucial time. Thank you for your smiles, your hugs, your honesty and your courage. Thank you for always making the day better and for truly making an impact in my life and those of so many others. Thank you for being a great example of what it means to be a good and decent human being. I’m so grateful we crossed paths and even more so that we can still stay in touch. Thank you, Erika, for being you.
