.088 Phillip Cheng

After a slew of my mediocre puns and dad-jokes, Phil still managed to speak with me on the night that we met. This was, of course, just the beginning of my realizing that Phil is beyond patient, exquisitely smart, and consistently good company. He listens with calmness, never trying to interrupt or get his next story in, and he speaks with a smoothness that has everyone listening to him and enjoying his presence. Knowing that we met only a couple of years ago is baffling to me, because it feels like I’ve known him for so much longer.

Equipped with a fabulous sense of humor and a sharp mind that is always a few steps ahead, Phil genuinely is so much fun to be around. We can talk about the silliest things to the biggest stressors in our life; nothing is out of the equation. I have never worked professionally with him but it’s so clear by the way he speaks about his industry and by the way that he treats every moment with such care that he’s incredible at what he does. He has a knack for understanding people and stories, and is always empathetic in his approach. As a friend, Phil is loyal and trustworthy, kind and wise. Having him in my life has allowed for me to grow in so many ways, often realized in the moments just after seeing him when on the train home.

Phil, thank you so much for your sweet self and for your patience and compassion. Thank you for laughing at my jokes and for entertaining my wild thoughts and ideas, some of which make no sense. Thank you for having such a wonderful perspective on life and for bringing that and your best interest in those around you into every conversation and obstacle. Thank you for being such an amazing cook (and baker, but only after window shopping while unhinged) and for so clearly noticing, enjoying and appreciating the little things in life. It’s inspiring. I’m so grateful to have you in my life (thank you, Kaz!) and for all of what the future hold. Thank you, Phil, for being you.
