.037 Shonda Goward

When I stepped in Shonda’s office my sophomore year of college, I was a bit directionless, very behind in my classes from switching schools, and in need of some guidance. Shonda gave me that guidance, along with 3 years worth of helpful advice, a listening ear, and an honest and clear sound board for all of my questions and ideas. She instantly gave off a welcoming vibe that allowed for me to be real about my goals, and in exchange, for her to be real with me about how I could achieve them.

I believe that Shonda’s title at the time was “Senior Academic Advisor,” but she helped me, whether she knew it or not, with so much more than academics. Shonda was extremely patient with me, through my probably-too-many visits, and through my constant wavering on decisions around classes, projects, you name it. She was strong in her thoughts and clear with her expectations, therefore pushing me toward where I needed to go. She was compassionate and kind at all times and was supportive of my crazy ideas while making sure I was on track to graduate. Having switched schools, I had a lot of metaphorical paperwork to wade through and classes to catch up on, and Shonda was helpful through it all.

Shonda, thank you so much for being such an important role in my college experience, and beyond. Thank you for somehow doing what you do for countless other students, and never once making it seem like a burden, though I’m sure there were days that were harder than others. Thank you for your counsel and support, and thank you for always managing to make me laugh. Thank you for the passion and dedication that you so clearly pour into your job, each and every day. Thank you for continuing to be a guiding light in so many lives and for not letting the chaos of 2020 get you down. Thank you for helping us all at such crucial moments in our lives, many of which some aren’t so lucky to have a helping hand. Thank you for your positivity and joy. I’m so grateful for you, and above all, thank you for being you.
