.182 Carolyn Perkins
When I met and became friends with Julia in high school, I didn’t realize it would lead to me loving a wonderful family full of personality, fun, and deep love, led by the the joyous matriarch that is Carolyn. I quickly learned that she’s a shining example of what it means to be positive, strong, jubilant, and resilient. I don’t have a single memory of being in their home where Carolyn wasn’t greeting me with a hug or a sweet welcome from the other room.
Over the last 10+ years, I have come to appreciate more and more the courage and compassion that emanates from Carolyn. She is always looking out for others and leads with that sense of selflessness and kindness. She accepted me for who I am when I came out as gay and covered me with the same love and adoration she gives to her family. She is so comforting to be around, and if Julia, Michelle or big Russ are there, too, they all have me laughing instantly with their vibrant personalities and unique Perkins-family bond. Perhaps what stands out to me most, however, is how Carolyn has faced times of struggle and pain with such bravery and patience. She’s a role model in so many ways but especially when it comes to her gratitude, unconditional love, empathy, and strength.
Carolyn, thank you so much for being such a bright light in this world. Thank you for being so kind and sweet to me over the years and for welcoming me into your beautiful home and family. Thank you for your perseverance through tough times and for always looking toward the positive. Thank you for raising three outrageously fun, smart, and passionate kids who I couldn’t live without. Thank you for being such a remarkable figure in the lives of so many. Thank you, Carolyn, for being you.
