.054 Fantine Giap
Fantine and I haven’t spoken in probably over a decade, and yet, it didn’t stop us from picking up the phone, catching up, and swapping stories. Growing up (we met as kids in elementary school), she was kind, first and foremost. She had this infectious smile that radiated kindness from it; it was impossible not to smile back when you’d see her. Her intelligence was only matched by her compassion. Well, that and her insane skills on the basketball court at recess. Fantine was all of these things and more, and the good yet not shocking news is that they’re all still true today.
Fantine is and has always been a role model for me. She’s extremely driven and independent and she taught me the value of true friendship, one that stems from respect, courage, and the joy of being around one another. She’s honest and straightforward, seemingly always doing something incredible with ease and gratitude for those around her. Looking back, our third grade class was a pivotal moment for the both of us, in very different ways. For me, I had the simple yet crucial of honor having Fantine as a friend, someone who entertained my ridiculous energy and goofiness and I figured my own self out. Fantine was just a wonderful human being to be around, and it’s so clear that today she still exudes that beautiful energy and surrounds herself with good, decent friends and family, all of whom she cares about deeply.
Fantine, thank you so very much for being an example of who we should all strive to be. Thank you for our call and for the incredibly kind words you shared; they truly mean more than you know. Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face, whether it was as kids in SD or now when I see photos of your beautiful life unfolding online. Thank you for your big and gracious heart and for so clearly appreciating the little things in life. I’m so unbelievably grateful that we sat next to each other that year and can still reminisce about The Chokey (lol) and all-things Solana Highlands. The world is so very lucky to have you in it, and I’m so grateful to have you in my life. Thank you for being all that you are.
